The news parents have been desperately waiting to come for more than a year now finally hit today: The kids’ vaccines are coming.

The White House announced on Wednesday morning its plan to vaccinate as many of the newly eligible 28 million American children aged 5-to-11 as possible when the FDA approves Pfizer’s vaccine for them, as expected, quite likely as early as next week. The Biden administration has set up a specific, detailed structure for how the shots will be rolled out, that both mimics the successes of the adult rollout and corrects the mistakes made along the way. The key aspects of the plan:

  • Shots will be provided to, and given by, pediatricians, children’s hospitals and “pharmacies with in-store clinics,” rather than mass vaccination sites. The idea is to get closer to where kids are, and to deal with them differently than adults.
  • The 28 million shots required have already been acquired and will be deployed immediately upon the FDA’s approval. The idea is to avoid the staggered, ranked-by-eligibility, confusing rollout we all dealt with back in March, April and May.
  • The smaller dosage — 10 milligrams, as opposed to 30 milligrams — will make it easier to store the…
