Five Random Memories From Election Day 2016

  1. I vote early every year, including 2016, so I wasn’t out at the polls on Election Day. Instead, I grabbed lunch at a locally run sandwich place here in Athens, Georgia, called Marti’s at Midday, which is run by (and mostly serves) women. I’d never found the place particularly political beforehand — it is, after all, a sandwich shop — but it was celebratory that day, with everyone sporting their “I Voted” stickers and the staff all wearing I’m With Her shirts. I do not know if they played “Fight Song” over the loudspeakers, they probably didn’t, but in my memory they absolutely did. There was such a sense of joy there, because the outcome was obviously certain: By the end of the night, the United States of America would have its first female President. I remember that more than anything else that day, if I’m being honest: The joy of anticipation. It now feels like my last memory of the Before Time.
  2. Remember when Trump and Melania voted, and a camera caught a shot of him trying to peek at Melania’s ballot? It felt like the last glimpse of the overwhelming insecurity of this dope who had somehow conned his way into the Presidential nomination of a major American political party.
