Do Not Assume Herschel Walker Is Going To Lose
There is no such thing as a KO anymore.
I’m not sure there’s ever been a worse candidate for national office than Herschel Walker. His personal difficulties are well-documented, from a history of domestic violence to the ever-increasing number of secret children to his past issues with multiple personalities. But he might be even worse on the stump. Walker struggles to answer basic questions about his campaign, he has repeatedly ducked debates (he’s finally doing one on October 14), he’s constantly getting caught in lies about his background and his policy stances and his stump speeches are amalgams of nonsensical prattle. There are certain people who are gifted — some might even say cursed — with a preternatural ability to be a great politician. Herschel Walker is not one of these people.
But his campaign had its worst moment — and one of the worst moments imaginable — last night. You can get a great explainer of what went down from political writer Don Moynihan right here, but basically, around 7 p.m. ET on Monday night, The Daily Beast broke the story that Walker, who believes abortion should be illegal in all circumstances, had paid for a woman’s abortion in 2009. He immediately denied the story — despite the site having literal receipts and a get-well card he had sent the woman — but the problems compounded…
