The pandemic situation has improved and sure looks like it will keep getting better. Are you ready to be excited about it?
One of the dumbest things I’ve ever written — and there a whole lot of contenders — was from last June. June 21, to be exact. The piece, written right here on Medium, reads today like the words of an Atlanta Falcons fan when their team was up 28–3 on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LI. “Our Masks Will Be the Physical Artifacts of Our Time” read the headline, and the piece featured the following sentence: “What am I going to do with all these masks?” It turns out: I’d be wearing them! Still am, as it turns out.
It’s clear now I was spiking the football before passing the goal line. But it wasn’t crazy for me to do so at the time. The day before, June 20, the United States, according to The New York Times’s Covid-19 Tracker, the seven-day tracking average of positive Covid-19 cases in the United States was 11,133 positive Covid-19 cases in the United States, which was the lowest total this country had notched since March 26, 2020. The United States was the world’s leader in vaccines, the CDC had said people didn’t have to wear masks indoors anymore and it really felt like we’d turned the final corner on this thing.
